A new project on the horizon, co-directed with Meggan Blessing at the Florida Museum of Natural History, is the Big Mound City Archaeological Project. In only its pilot phase now, this long-term undertaking will examine the Big Mound City archaeological site, located near the eastern edge of Lake Okeechobee.
Big Mound City is a complex of monumental constructions much akin to those seen at the Fort Center archaeological site. The site was briefly excavated in 1933 and 1934, however the artifacts resulting from that expedition were lost through time. The new radiometric dates that were recently taken at Big Mound City are the result of the only new research conducted at that site since Willey’s own work.
